What is the Beating the Odds Challenge?
The Beating the Odds Challenge is to attempt to make 13 consecutive shots in a game of “Around the World”. This consists of making 7 interior shots, 5 beyond the arc shots (3 pointers), and 1 half court shot without missing (refer to the video for exact locations of each shot). A person taking the challenge should record their attempt and upload the video to social media (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc.) with the hashtag #beatingtheoddschallenge. If the participant is unable to complete the challenge (or completes the challenge and still wants to donate!), then he or she will click the donate button above and make a donation of his or her choice to Excell Academy. Any donation amount is welcome, from $1 to $1,000,000!
Purpose
The purpose of the Beating the Odds Challenge is to first recognize and celebrate the outstanding achievements that our students have accomplished despite the many obstacles they may face. We also believe that this would be a fun and creative way to raise money for our school. We are raising funds for a technology overhaul and to build a playground and transportation for after school tutoring and activities. Getting today’s latest technology into the hands of our students is key to providing them what they need to be competitive in the 21st Century. In agreement with Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative to “Raise A Healthier Generation of Kids” we want to provide our students with opportunities to move and exercise on a daily basis on their own playground. Excell Academy does not currently have its own playground and funds raised in this challenge will be used to this end.
In 2015, Excell Academy was recognized as a “Beating the Odds” school by the Star Tribune for their academic performance despite the low socio-economic background of their students. With the challenges that our students face on a day to day basis, the odds of academic success are not in their favor. However, our students are beating the odds and proving statistics wrong everyday. Therefore, our students have been the sole inspiration for the Beating the Odds Challenge. The challenge is an ode to our students and staff and is dedicated to their success.
